Should I buy a new boat or a used boat?
New boats offer full factory warranties, the latest features, and peace of mind. Used boats provide immediate availability and better value, often at a lower price. At Maryland Boat Sales we inspect every pre-owned boat thoroughly, provide honest condition reports, and include an in-water sea trial. How much does it really cost to own a boat in Maryland / on the Chesapeake Bay?
Beyond the purchase price, expect annual costs for slip/storage, maintenance, winterization, fuel, insurance, and registration. For a typical 20–27 ft boat, many owners budget 5% -10% of the boat’s value per year (storage and winterization are often the largest ongoing expenses in our seasonal climate). Do you finance boats?
Yes. We offer in-house financing for both new and used boats through an extensive network of local credit unions and national banks. This helps us secure the best available rates. Do you offer warranties on new and used boats?
New boats: Yes—full manufacturer warranties apply. Ask your sales advisor for details on the specific brand and model; many are transferable.
Used boats: We do not offer dealer warranties unless an existing factory warranty transfers. Instead, every used boat gets a sea trial, and we encourage you to bring a certified marine mechanic or arrange a licesnsed professional survey. What should I look for when buying a used boat?
Buying a used boat is one way to get on the Chesapeake Bay quickly and affordably — but not all pre-owned boats are the same. At Maryland Boat Sales we are completely transparent about the two types of used boats we offer so you know exactly what level of inspection and protection you’re getting.
1. Boats Owned & Sold Directly by Maryland Boat Sales These are vessels we purchase outright and take full responsibility for. However most pre-owned boats older than 5 years of age are sold as-is. Every one is pulled from the water, pressure-washed, and thoroughly inspected by our in-house service team before it goes on the lot. We then launch it again for a complete in-water inspection and sea trial with you.
2. Brokered Boats
These belong to private sellers; we simply act as the selling agent. In these cases we only pass along the information the owner provides (service records, engine hours, repairs, etc.). Because ins some cases we have not performed our own mechanical or structural inspection, we strongly recommend you hire a licensed marine surveyor on your behalf before making an offer. A professional survey (usually $25-$30 per foot) gives you an independent evaluation of the hull, engines, electrical systems, and overall value.
Key Items Every Buyer Should Check Regardless of how the boat is listed, focus on these critical areas:
- Engine hours & service records – Low hours are great, but consistent maintenance is more important. Ask for all receipts and logbooks.
- Hull condition – Look for osmotic blistering (common in saltwater and brackish Chesapeake Bay waters), stress cracks, or previous repairs.
- Electrical systems – Test all lights, bilge pumps, electronics, and battery condition.
- Trailer (if included) – Check axle, brakes, tires, lights, and winch.
- Recent repairs & maintenance history – Any major work in the last 2–3 years? Ask for documentation.

Do you offer boating lessons or captain training on my new boat?
Yes, we provide personalized, hands-on boating instruction right on your boat. Whether you’re a brand-new captain, upgrading to a larger vessel, or want to build confidence with your family and crew, our experienced captain will get you comfortable and safe on the Chesapeake Bay.
We don’t just cover the basics. We guide you through your maiden voyage and teach all facets of boat ownership, including:
- Overall boat orientation and operation of all features
- Safety checks and emergency procedures
- Trip planning, weather awareness, and cruise preparation
- Navigation, electronics, and Rules of the Road
- Getting underway, maneuvering, docking, and handling the boat under power
60% of your instruction time is spent away from the dock, focusing on real-world skills such as:
- Maneuvering and docking in different conditions
- Anchoring and rafting off
- Fueling up and pumping out
- Efficiently running the boat — adjusting attitude and pitch for best fuel economy in wind and waves
Instruction can be tailored to your needs: a few hours, a full day, a weekend, or longer. Many new owners start with dock-to-open-water training and later use us as ongoing advisors for maintenance, repairs, and seasonal care. Our #1 goal is to build your confidence and safety. Our Purchase Policy
Do you require a deposit?
Yes, we require a 5% deposit to hold a boat and remove it from the market. Your deposit is 100% refundable if the deal doesn’t proceed (before the sea trial and final paperwork). Sometimes there are times Ready to reserve a boat? Contact us to get started.
When do I get to test drive / sea trial the boat?
Every purchase includes an in-water sea trial so you can experience the boat in real conditions. We schedule it once your funds are ready (after deposit and financing approval, signed contract). How do I register, title, and insure a boat in Maryland?
We guide you through the entire process. Maryland requires titling and registration via DNR Form B-240, plus a 5% vessel excise tax on the purchase price (or fair market value). We handle paperwork, collect taxes/fees, and submit them promptly for our in state buyers. Registration is valid for two years. We also connect you with preferred insurance agents if needed, but in most cases your current insurance company can provide a competitive quote.
Do you accept credit cards for payment?
Yes, however there is a 3% fee on top of the balance paid by the customer.
